The flooding is bad. There is no news yet of how many archives are affected but I am afraid there must be many in the Mid-Atlantic and New England. Here are two ways you can help:

The Society of American Archivists Foundation has an Emergency Disaster Assistance Grant Fund. If you want to make an online donation (you must have or create an online profile for SAA’s web site), go here. If you want to mail in a check, send it to:

Society of American Archivists Foundation
National Disaster Recovery Fund for Archives
17 North State Street, Suite 1425
Chicago, IL  60602
*Please note on the check that it is for the Disaster Fund

The Mid-Atlantic Regional Archives Conference (MARAC) also has a disaster relief fund, which supports the needs of archives in its region. If you want to make an online donation (you must have or create an online profile for MARARC’s web site) go here. If you prefer to mail in a check, send it to:

MARAC
Dickinson College
P.O. Box 1773
Carlisle, PA 17013
*Please include “Disaster Relief” in the subject line

Contributions to both funds are tax deductible.

If your archives is affected by the floods and you need to apply for assistance, information about the SAA fund is here and information about the MARAC fund is here.

If you know of any other ways archives can either provide or receive assistance, please let me know and I’ll pass it along.

I believe NEDCC and some other organizations offer assistance in the form of supplies and expertise in recovering from disasters. Some states also have a network of volunteers who can help.
